1. Golghar, Patna

Golghar was meant to be the first in a series of similar structures intended to act as a preventive measure against frequent famines in the area. It’s one of the best place in Patna. A unique, whitewashed dome with a spiraled staircase, Golghar was built by Captain John Garstin in 1786 as a granary for the British army garrisoned in the city. The most amazing thing to note about this structure is that the huge dome, 29 m in height and 125 m in diameter, is not supported by any pillars!None of the other ‘golghars’ were ultimately built, giving us a one-of-a-kind building that you must-visit in Patna.

2. Ruins of Pataliputra, Patna

Lying just a little distance away from the current city of Patna are the ruins of its predecessor – Pataliputra. The city that was ruled by 3 legendary kings – Ajatshatru, Chandragupta and Ashoka – is today just a pile of rubble, sandstone pillars, wood platforms that may have supported a staircase, foundation bricks of a Buddhist monastery and carved stone pieces. But don’t let this description dissuade you from visiting the ruins (better known locally as Kumhrar) of what was once the center of power, trade, arts and learning in ancient India.  You’ll be in good company as this is one of the most popular tourist places in Bihar, attracting visitors from around the globe.

3. Nalanda Mahavihara, Patna

Nalanda was one of the earliest universities in the country and home to students from India, Tibet, China, Korea and Central Asia. Eminent Chinese scholar and traveler Hsuan-tsang visited the university between 685 and 762 AD and studied Buddhist theology, the Vedas, logic, and metaphysics. Nalanda flourished from 5th century AD to 1200 AD. Nalanda is believed to have three huge libraries – so huge, they burnt for six months when the marauding armies of Islamist invaders attacked the monastery in 1193.About 95 km from Patna, this glorious scholastic and monastic institution today tells its stories through its ruins of stupas, shrines and viharas.Displays include the Nalanda University seal, bronze and stone sculptures. Also visit the Xuan Zang Memorial Hall, built by the Chinese in honor of the famous traveler, while you are here. Spend a day at this peaceful point of interest and revel in the wonderful history of the city.

4. Mahavir Mandir, Patna

Mahavir Temple is one of the largest and fabulous temples, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Patna’s Mahavir Temple is a tranquil oasis in a crowded urban jungle. Most likely built in the 17th century, the temple started gaining popularity after India’s partition in 1947 when a large number of Hindu refugees from the newly-created Pakistan started settling down in the city. Besides the beautiful idol of Lord Hanuman, the temple is also home to a ‘floating stone’ from the legendary Ram Setu.

5. Ganga Ghat

Gandhi Ghat is one of the main ghats situated on the bank of Ganges River in Patna. It is located behind the National Institute of Technology,Patna. You can easily travel to Gandhi Ghat as it is 5 Km north east of Patna Junction Railway Station. Kite Festival and Ganga Aarti (performed with 51 lamps, by a group of priests, dressed in saffron robes) are the main attraction of Ganga Ghat. The ghat is famous for its Evening Ganga Aarti. It is also associated with the immersion of ashes of Mahatma Gandhi in the river Ganges. There is also another activity that the ghat is famous for River cruise ship which has a restaurant on board.

6. Srikrishna Science Centre

It is also the main attraction of Patna in terms of science and Technology. It is the Science museum situated in Patna, Bihar. It is named after the first Chief minister of Bihar, Sri Krishna Sinha. It forms a unit of the National Council of Science Museum, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

7. Patna Museum

Patna Museum is one of the top places to visit in Patna, Bihar and the locally is also called the Jadu Ghar. This place is known for holding around 50,000 rare art objects which are worth admiring. Alongside that, there are Indian artefacts dated from the middle ages, British Colonial Era and also the ancient period. Built in 1917, this place has a rich collection which reflects the Indian history and glory of the state. The building showcases the Mughal and Rajput architecture and has many galleries inside its premises. This is among the most famous places in Patna.

8. Choti Dargah, Patna

Choti Dargah is one of the fabulous place in Patna,  it’s just 32 km west of Patna lies one of the finest and least known Mughal structures in India – the Choti Dargah of Maner. A magnificent three-storied structure, the mausoleum was erected in 1616 in honor of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Shah Daulat who passed away in Maner and was buried here. Its beautiful dome flanked by four twelve-sided minarets, age-old walls adorned with exquisite motifs and ceilings inscribed with passages from The Quran make for memorable viewing.

9. Sanjay Gandhi Botanical Garden, Patna

Sanjay Gandhi Botanical Garden  is the wonderful place and locally called Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, this botanical garden was founded in 1969.This is one of the best places to visit in Patna for couples which is home to a vast variety of flora and fauna. The botanical garden is also called the Patna zoo and people can come here with kids to enjoy some exciting things like elephant ride and toy train.

The park was first established as a botanical garden in 1969. The then Governor of Bihar, Sri Nityanand Kanungo, provided almost 34 acres (14 ha) of land from the Governor House campus for the garden. In 1972, Public Works added 58.2 acres (23.6 ha) to this, and the Revenue Department transferred 60.75 acres (24.58 ha) to the Forest Department to help expand the park.

Since 1973, this park has been a biological park, combining a botanical garden with a zoo. The land acquired from the Public Works Department and the Revenue Department was declared protected forest by the state government on 8 March 1983.

The zoo is currently home to over 800 animals of about 110 species, including tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, hippopotamus, crocodile, elephants, Himalayan black bear, jackal, black bucks, spotted deer, peafowl, hill myna, gharial, python, Indian rhinoceros, chimpanzee, giraffe, zebra, emu, and white peacock.

Having started as a botanical garden, the park currently houses more than 300 species of trees, herbs and shrubs. Plant exhibits include a nursery for medicinal plants, an orchid house, a fern house, a glass house, and a rose garden.

The park also includes an aquarium which is the largest revenue generator after the general admission fee. The aquarium has about 35 species of fish, and the snake house has 32 snakes belonging to 5 species.

10. Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Patna 

Patna is revered by the followers of the Sikh religion as this is the place where the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singhji was born. Takht Sri Patna Sahib was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to commemorate the event. Also known as Harmandir Sahib, the holy shrine is built in the old quarters of Patna city in an area known as Kucha Farrukh Khan and is thronged with devotees from all over the globe. Visit it for a glimpse into Sikh history. Relics of the 10th Guru like four iron arrows, weapons, a pair of his sandals and a cradle with gold-plated stands are housed in the shrine.
