Do you know the ancient name of Patna, its Pataliputra? Patna being the capital of Bihar state of India is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world.


2. Founder of Patna and Population -

Patna was founded by the King of Magadha “King Bimbisara” in 490 BCE or around 2400 years ago. 

Patna has an estimated population of around 1.6 million in 2011, which makes it the 19 largest city in India by population count. 


3. Famous Personalities of Patna -

Patna was famous for its learning and fine art. 4. About rise and fall of Patna -

During Maurya and Gupta empires, Patna the Indian Subcontinent was known for seat of power, politics and culture center. Its glory fell with the fall of the Gupta Empire. But during the 17th century its glory was revived again by the British as a center of International Trade. 


In 1912 Patna Became the capital of Bihar and Orissa Province following the partition of Bengal Presidency.

Patna is the 21st century fastest growing city in the world and 5th fastest growing city in India according to a study with annual growth of 3.72% during 2006 to 2010. Its per capita gross domestic product is around 1 Lakh. For starting a business, it is ranked second by the World Bank after Delhi. 


6. Size of Patna -

The total land area of Patna is 136 Km Square. The city is approximately 35 Km in length and 17 Km in width. Capital State of Bihar is situated on the southern bank of river Ganges.
